Euro 2020 Finals encounter, with Finland taking on Belgium on Monday the 21st of June, 2021, at Saint-Petersburg Stadium.

Finland beat Denmark 0-1 on their debut in this tournament, but their 1-0 defeat to Russia has put them in a particularly… tricky position; they sit third in the group table, on three points, level with 2nd-placed Russia, they actually have a better goal difference than them, but what matters the most is that they have lost their head-to-head game, that’s why they are third instead of second.

They can still finish second and qualify directly for the last 16, but for that, they need minimum a point against Belgium. If they lose and Russia lose to Denmark, then three teams will finish level on three points and it will come down to goal difference. Finland’s current form reads; LWLLL. Coach Markku Kanerva played a 5-3-2 formation against Russia the other day, with Pukki and Pohjanpalo up front.

Belgium became one of the first teams to qualify, mathematically, for the last 16 of the tournament. After beating Russia 3-0 (actually, 0-3, on Russian soil) on their debut, they made it two out of two against Denmark (in Copenhagen, another win over real hosts), a precious 1-2, despite conceding first as early as two minutes into the match. They are on six points, as previously mentioned they have already qualified, even though they could still drop second in the group table.

Their current form reads; WWWDW. Coach Roberto Martínez played a 3-4-2-1 formation against Denmark the other day, with Romelu Lukaku up front. Thorgan Hazard equalized 1-1 in the 54th minute and substitute Kevin de Bruyne scored what proved to be the winner for Belgium in the 70th minute. He had taken Dries Mertens’ place at halftime.

Finland and Belgium have met 11 times in the past and this may look… weird, judging by today’s quality gap between the two, but the Finns actually have a slightly better record of 4W, 4D and 3L. Interestingly, it’s the Belgians who have scored marginally more goals, 20 over 19. More recently, they met in a friendly game, in June 2016, right before the Euro finals in France. They drew 1-1 back then.

A 0-2 victory for Belgium is predicted at full-time.
Date: Monday, 21st of June, 2021.
